Ingredients
3 pounds Russet potatoes, peeled and sliced thin2 cups heavy cream1 cup whole milk4 tablespoons unsalted butter3 cloves garlic, minced1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated2 cups Gruyère cheese, shredded1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded1 teaspoon salt½ teaspoon black pepper¼ teaspoon nutmeg
Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Peel the potatoes and slice them into thin, even rounds about ⅛ inch thick.
Step 2: Prepare the Cheese Sauce
- In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the minced garlic and cook for about one minute until fragrant. Next, pour in the heavy cream and milk. Stir continuously and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
Step 3: Add the Cheese
- Reduce the heat to low and gradually stir in the Parmesan, Gruyère, and mozzarella cheeses. Continue whisking until the cheese melts completely and forms a smooth sauce. Add the salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
Step 4: Layer the Potatoes
- Arrange a layer of potato slices in the prepared baking dish. Pour some of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Continue layering potatoes and sauce until all ingredients have been used. Try to distribute the sauce evenly between layers so every bite is creamy and flavorful.
Step 5: Cover and Bake
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and place it in the oven. Bake for 40 minutes. During this stage, the potatoes soften and absorb the flavors of the cheese sauce.
Step 6: Remove the Foil
- Carefully remove the foil and continue baking for another 20 minutes.
Step 7: Rest Before Serving
- Remove the dish from the oven and allow it to rest for about 10 minutes.
Step 8: Serve and Enjoy
- Spoon the potatoes onto serving plates and enjoy while warm.
Notes
For the best results, slice the potatoes evenly and avoid rushing the baking process. Using freshly grated cheese instead of pre-shredded cheese creates a smoother sauce because it melts more easily.
I've also found that allowing the casserole to rest before serving significantly improves the texture. The sauce thickens and clings to the potatoes beautifully.
